2016-2017 Hudson Valley Championship

February 5, 2017

FTC 8527 qualified for the Hudson Valley Championship at the Red Hook Qualifier in December. This is the first time we have a team at this event. It's a very chaotic morning. We have two team members that could not be here, and one that woke up very sick this morning. (That didn't stop her from competing though.)
The day started with setting up the pit, everyone pitched in to make a quick job of it.

Ty, Jacob, and Ana headed out to do some early scouting.

Then it was on to robot inspection. The inspection was fine, but the field test did not go as planned.

The team had to head upstairs to queue for judging before they finished with the field test. It was stressful to hear them being called to the field repeatedly while they were stuck in the queue upstairs, especially when they started to threaten disqualification for the teams that had not passed robot inspections yet. It all worked out in the end, but did not make for a fun morning.

Mr. Collins talked with the team while waiting in the queue for judging. For some reason, our judging room ended up 40 minutes behind.

The team agreed that this was not their best judging session this season, and was probably their worst. For some reason, things were not clicking today.

Soon it was time for Opening Ceremonies, followed by the start of qualifying matches. Sam gave the team a pep talk and got everyone ready to scout matches. They even recruited some parent to help again.

Competition was fierce and we only won 2 of our 5 matches. We did finally get our autonomous program to work and the points we scored were the reason we won the matches we did. So overall, while not the performance we had hoped for, we still had some positive things to focus on.

Our first trip to the Hudson Valley Championship ended without the team earning an award, not a big surprise after judging. They did bring home a great souvenir. They asked all the teams to sign one of the "particles" from this year's game field. It now sits in the trophy case with the awards they won this season.

At the end of the competition some of the team headed home, the rest headed back to the hotel to watch the Super Bowl!
